PRESENTED BY THE SUBSTATION AND FRAME: A BIENNIAL OF DANCE

Imagined as an experience of ‘choreography and sound’, DaS exists as a form of training for dance artists and musicians to practice live performance together. For the first time ever, this workshop is open to an audience.

DaS #7 is facilitated by The Substation resident artists Melanie Lane and Jo Lloyd and soundtracked by a live set from artist and musician Female Wizard. Open and free to all practising dance artists, DaS focuses on listening; to sound, to the body, to space and considers this as a frame to transport, transform, share and rupture.

DaS is a supportive space where dance artists can practice both roles of performer and audience, with the option to freely oscillate between these. The practice is open to including writing and documenting.

Anyone is welcome to come watch DaS and witness this intersection of artist practice. Visitors are also encouraged to visit the current exhibition REALREEL, curated by Jo Lloyd and Melanie Lane, in the ground floor galleries before, during or after DaS #7.

ACCESS

This event is wheelchair accessible and gender-neutral accessible toilets are available.

ARTIST RSVP

PRESENTED BY THE SUBSTATION AND FRAME: A BIENNIAL OF DANCE

REALREEL
is an exhibition curated by Jo Lloyd and Melanie Lane bringing together a nation-wide selection of artists that centre the body [dance] on screen with a focus on experimental, contemporary performance making and varied, Australian choreographic voices.

Spanning from cultural storytelling to speculative fiction, the exhibition reflects on the language of dance on film as an archive of memory, ephemerality and imagination.

Traditionally a live art form, these films shift dance beyond the limits of the body and into a space that captures time, movement and human experience in extraordinary ways.

ACCESS

This exhibition is wheelchair accessible and gender-neutral accessible toilets are available.

PRESENTED BY THE SUBSTATION AND FRAME: A BIENNIAL OF DANCE

Progress Report
is a solo performance about consumerism and waste. The work puts everyday decisions under the microscope to reveal seemingly contradictory, at times hilarious and often unbearable truths.

A hortative manifesto that boldly proclaims wasting waste is a waste, Progress Report exemplifies the imperative need to transform the value of garbage.

With this latest work, long-time collaborators Alison Currie and Alisdair Macindoe delve into their mutual interest in objects and subjects in performance.

Progress Report features an ever-evolving stage design by Meg Wilson, subtle and impactful sonic worlds created by co-sound designers Sascha Budimski and Alisdair Macindoe and is delicately performed by Cazna Brass and Rachel Coulson.

Progress Report features several cubic metres of industrial plastics that have been intercepted midway through their recycling process. The work mirrors a dynamic state of change, reflecting this intercepted process, where objects, performer, text and choreography are in flux.

The Substation galleries, bar and bookshop will open one hour prior to the performance. Latecomers will not be admitted.

Drawing from the relationship between music and dance, DaS is a celebration of this deep history. Imagined as an experience of 'choreography and sound', DaS exists as a form of training for dance artists and musicians to practice live performance at a time where these opportunities are becoming increasingly hard to find. The first iterations will be closed to audiences with a view to work towards public viewings once the practice is established and COVID regulations allow.

Open and free to all professional dance artists, each session will focus on listening; to sound, to the body, to space and will consider this as a frame to transport, transform, share and rupture. It is a supportive space where dance artists can practice both roles of performer and audience, with the option to freely oscillate between these. The practice is open to including writing and notating.

You are invited to participate in the third iteration of DaS event on Friday 2 July facilitated by Substation resident artists Melanie Lane and Jo Lloyd, and soundtracked by a live set from Marco Cher-Gibard.
