Photography by Aneta Urbonaite

Using the moniker Female Wizard, Alexander Powers has vitalised Melbourne’s dance music community for almost a decade, spearheading a new wave of queer DJing and playing acclaimed festivals and events such as Boiler Room, Golden Plains, Dark Mofo, Soft Centre and Hybrid.

Her galvanizing sets, known for creating collective transcendence through powerful sonic immersion, have featured on globally renowned music broadcasting platforms NTS and Rinse FM, and in her ongoing residency at local cult underground queer night Le Fag.

During 2021, Powers began work on her genre-defying album TIE-EE-YIE-EE-YIE-EE-YIME released by Heavy Machinery Records, for which she was awarded Best Electronic Act at the 2021 Music Victoria Awards.

As a music organiser, Powers has devised Powertrip, a club night, mix series and record label whose aim is to cultivate community, encourage experimentation and provide a platform for local producers and DJs.

PRESENTED BY THE SUBSTATION AND FRAME: A BIENNIAL OF DANCE

Imagined as an experience of ‘choreography and sound’, DaS exists as a form of training for dance artists and musicians to practice live performance together. For the first time ever, this workshop is open to an audience.

DaS #7 is facilitated by The Substation resident artists Melanie Lane and Jo Lloyd and soundtracked by a live set from artist and musician Female Wizard. Open and free to all practising dance artists, DaS focuses on listening; to sound, to the body, to space and considers this as a frame to transport, transform, share and rupture.

DaS is a supportive space where dance artists can practice both roles of performer and audience, with the option to freely oscillate between these. The practice is open to including writing and documenting.

Anyone is welcome to come watch DaS and witness this intersection of artist practice. Visitors are also encouraged to visit the current exhibition REALREEL, curated by Jo Lloyd and Melanie Lane, in the ground floor galleries before, during or after DaS #7.

ACCESS

This event is wheelchair accessible and gender-neutral accessible toilets are available.

ARTIST RSVP

Dance artists must RSVP to participate in the workshop.

Anyone is welcome to attend the workshop as an audience member (no booking required).
