PRESENTED BY THE SUBSTATION AND ROOM40
The sound work of Marina Rosenfeld is multifarious, dynamic and unexpectedly intimate. Nowhere is this versatility better captured than in her practice as a composer for turntables. Pushing outward from the echoes of DJ culture and the transformative intent of musique concrete, Marina Rosenfeld has invented an entirely unique approach to sound for turntables, using the very materials of the format in a way few others do. Developing an approach where by she creates her own Dubplates, platters of sound, voice and instruments she has recorded and cut, she composes live using these raw materials to create radically variable and dynamic performance works. Each time the work is performed the very material from which the sound is extracted changes, and sound of the medium itself, the Dubplate, becomes an equal features in the composition. It’s true material music, always changing, always evolving.
Marina is joined by Jana Irmert, whose live performance Portals opens a passage into the hidden sonic ecologies of the Amazon, created entirely from hydrophone and ultrasound recordings made in Brazil and Colombia. Through careful transposition and processing, these alien soundscapes are rendered audible, inviting the listener into a speculative act of interspecies listening.
