The Substation/​ Bubups/Children, Wurneet/Creek/

PRESENTED BY THE SUBSTATION

Bubups/Children - Wurneet/Creek are a series of five sculptural collages created over one huge day of the Hobsons Bay Library winter school holiday program. Led by Georgia Ensor, an artist and librarian at Hobsons Bay Library, families and children from 4 to 12 years of age came to collaborate on these unique pieces.

The Young Artists of Hobsons Bay were inspired by the stories and Cultural knowledge of Jaeden Williams-Briggs, a proud Yalukit Willam man of the Boonwurrung, who joined them for the day. The title is inspired by the Boonwurrung Words Jaeden shared with families as they walked on Country and talked about their role as artists, connecting with the Boonwurrung Seasons and surrounds of Hobsons Bay/Yalukit Willam.

Each artwork is a response to the animals and plants, shape and flow of the five creeks found in Hobsons Bay/Yalukit Willam, the Skeleton, Cherry, Stony, Laverton, and Kororoit. Through sensory learning, storytelling, and artmaking, children were invited to consider waterways, animals and landscapes as active and evolving, rather than passive settings for human activity.

Children created the images by arranging reclaimed materials and plants they found on Country. Materials include: Rocks, seaweed, sticks, felt, leather, yarn, wool tops, recycled papers, felt mats, pig face and daisy flowers, fabric, cellophane, paperbark, she-oak leaves and magical gum leaves.

The Young Artists of Hobsons Bay hope that this outdoor exhibition will create a visible public celebration of Country shaped by children’s responses to the sharing of Culture.

ABOUT THE YOUNG ARTISTS OF HOBSONS BAY LIBRARY

The Young Artists of Hobsons Bay Library are a group of children aged 4 to 12 who attended Newport Library from around the municipality during two special school holiday sessions. Children came and created with parents, grandparents and siblings in a one day intergenerational art making collective!

These were facilitated by artist/librarian Georgia Ensor and guest presenter Jaeden Williams-Briggs, a proud Yalukit Willam man of the Boonwurrung and the Founder and Director of Biik Bundjil.

Georgia Ensor has extensive experience encouraging emerging artists of all ages and abilities, she facilitates weekly Art Club sessions at Hobsons Bay Library.
