Dive into the vibrant world of Being Biracial—the podcast that celebrates the art of living across cultures. Hosted by Maria Birch-Morunga, a Māori/Pakehā facilitator and craft queen, and Kate Robinson, an Iranian/Australian artist and award-winning podcaster, this dynamic duo will continue their exploration of the beautiful complexities of mixed-race identities live at The Substation.
Through heartfelt and hilarious interviews, Maria and Kate dive into themes of culture, identity, and the ever-entertaining world of family gossip. Their guest list features incredible voices like comedian Lizzy Hoo, AFLW star Darcy Vescio, and musician Jen Cloher, among many others.
Joining them at The Substation is Tamil-Australian audio-visual and laser artist Vijay Thillaimuthu, who is gearing up for the world premiere of his work Oblation presented in partnership with Asia TOPA 2025, alongside The Substation’s CEO, Nuala Furtado who is of Goan-Indian and Northern Irish Catholic heritage.

Maria Birch-Morunga (she/her)
Maria is a Māori/Pakehā facilitator, fabric artist, and co-host of the Being Biracial podcast. Her work explores storytelling, identity, race, and mental health. As part of Museums Victoria’s Culture Makers, she co-created Threads, an immersive film now exhibited at Melbourne Museum, she also serves on the Creative Advisory Panel.
Kate Robinson (she/her)
Kate is an Iranian/Australian award-winning podcaster and multidisciplinary artist working across painting, craft, and murals. She has exhibited widely, served as the inaugural Feminist in Residence at QVWC, and curated the craftivist exhibition Make a Fuss. Kate co-hosts Being Biracial and brings her passion for weaving stories of culture and memory to every project.
Vijay Thillaimuthu (he/him)
Vijay Thillaimuthu is an audio-visual and laser artist of Sri Lankan Tamil and Cornish descent, born in Naarm. His practice fuses analogue sound synthesis with cutting-edge creative technologies. Known for creating immersive environments under the moniker Xenosine, Vijay has presented work globally at the Tokyo Festival of Modular, The Banff Centre, Unsound, MIFF, and more. He debuts Oblation at Asia TOPA 2025.
Nuala Furtado (she/they)
Nuala Furtado is a first generation Australian of migrant Goan-Indian/Northern Irish Catholic parents. She joined The Substation as CEO in 2023, bringing over a decade of programming experience in experimental and multi art form practices. A graduate of the Queensland Conservatorium, Nuala has led transformative programs at PACT and 4A Centre for Contemporary Art, participating in the Australia Council's Future Leaders program in 2019.
