PRESENTED BY THE SUBSTATION AND ROOM40
Known for their genre-blending methodologies, iconic American experimentalists Xiu Xiu defy simple description. Colliding divergent musical forms that travel from synth-fuelled pop and post-punk, through to neo-classical experimentalism, Xiu Xiu has come to epitomise a resolutely personal sound world beyond compare.
The band's leader, Jamie Stewart, is responsible for a dynamic songbook that embraces a determined restlessness without fear. Their latest album, 13" Frank Beltrame Italian Stiletto with Bison Horn Grips, marks their 17th chapter and further expands Xiu Xiu's universe of wonderment and uneasy delight. Their work is a truly individual and an utterly compelling vision of song, noise and harmonic ferocity.
SUPPORT: CHLOË SOBEK
Chloë Sobek is a composer-performer based in Naarm, Australia. Her work is currently centred on More-than-human-music, concerned with conceptualising the more-than-human within a sonic practice. The work points to a diverse enquiry of sonic and musical forms, from acoustemology through to Noise Music. Chloë’s practice is built around the Renaissance double bass, the violone. Her creative process couples maximalist and musique concrète sensibilities.
She has been described as ‘an artist that is thinking deeply about how to aestheticise what’s on everyone’s mind; to use art to drive engagement with ideas whilst pushing the boundaries of technique and technicality ’ - Kieran Ruffles, 4zzz.
