
The Substation/ Queer PHOTO Public Programs/

Alongside two exhibitions hosted by The Substation as part of Queer PHOTO – 'Alteration' by FAFSWAG and 'TBWWWTB' by Vic Bakin – The Substation building will play host to a number of free public programs across multiple weekends from Sunday 4 February – Sunday 24 March 2024.

Queer PHOTO Bus Tour
1pm – 4pm
Join Queer Icon 2joocee, PHOTO 2024 Curator Brendan McCleary, and artists Jake Elwes and Leilani Fuimaono on the queer, arty bus ride of your dreams!
Starting at Footscray Community Arts, join us on a guided bus tour as we journey across the venues within the Queer PHOTO Festival! 2joocee will be your host with the most who will keep you well informed throughout your afternoon adventure. We will hop on and off the queer bus of your dreams, as we explore each site and hear all about the artists behind the pieces, the message within their work and their interpretation of this festival's theme of 'Queer Futures'.

Queer PHOTO Tour: Newport Precinct
11am–12pm
Explore Queer PHOTO's program and get insights into the artworks through the perspectives of The Substation CEO and FAFSWAG programmer Nuala Furtado, and PHOTO 2024 curator Brendan McCleary. You will be guided through the Newport precinct of indoor and outdoor exhibitions within the Queer PHOTO program. Check out the work from Leilani Fuimaono, FAFSWAG and Vic Bakin. Artist Leilani will also be joining the tour to discuss the intricacies of community and belonging in LGBTQIA+ Pacific Islander diasporas.

WORKSHOP: Explore your Alter Ego with Sammaneh Pourshafighi
1pm–4pm
Come and explore gender through makeup, mask making, and photography with award-winning queer, Persian artist Sammaneh Pourshafighi. Sammaneh will guide you through a hands-on activity and photoshoot centred around experimenting and developing your own alter ego.
This is a drop-in workshop so come along and stay for 10 minutes or a whole hour!

WORKSHOP: Perfect Portraits with Matto Lucas
11am–12.30pm
Join queer photographer and local Westie Matto Lucas for a friendly, relaxed and creative portraiture workshop. All levels of photography experience welcome – whether you’re emerging or established, if you have a passion for capturing portraits this if for you.

Queer Street Photography Walk with Suzanne Pheonix
1pm–3pm
Explore Newport on this queer street photography walk led by Naarm-based photographer Suzanne Phoenix. Discover hidden queer gems within Melbourne's west while learning the art of street photography!
On this walk you will learn new skills whilst capturing images connected to LGBTQIA+ identity. Bring your analogue or digital camera, or even just your smartphone.

Our History in the West with The Queer Archives
11am–12pm
Have you ever wondered what it was like to be a queer person hanging out in Naarm 40 or 50 years ago? Well, now you can find out!
This super interesting talk from the legends at the Australian Queer Archives will take you through a photo tour of Melbourne's west throughout the 70s and 80s. You will get to see snaps of queer life – from event photography to Gayskate, the iconic queer skating event held in Footscray and Sunshine in the early 1980s.
Feel free to bring a note-taking device or just yourself and come for a queer history lesson!

WORKSHOP: How to Preserve Your Queer History with The Australian Queer Archives
1pm–2.30pm
This workshop from the wonderful humans at the Australian Queer Archives will teach you how you can archive your queer history! Learn techniques for archival photo preservation, how to catalogue effectively and some tips for storing important LGBTQIA+ materials.

Join us for this hands-on photo book workshop with published queer photographer Suzanne Phoenix. Whether you enjoy taking snaps of events, the streets, open landscape, portraits or experimental stuff, this workshop is for you. Learn image sequencing and photo curation.
