Foundations: Arts Development Program focuses on building strong foundations for developing ambitious experimental work. Led by Very Creative Producer (Arie Rain Glorie), the program is built on the belief that bringing producing, accessibility, operations and marketing conversations into the creative process early, helps artists develop projects that are both conceptually strong and more viable for future presentations.
Artists apply to the program with a project they want to develop further. Five successful applicants will be selected to participate in a one-day workshop exploring practical and accessible knowledge that offers a behind-the-scenes look at how arts organisations operate, ultimately gaining insight into what helps a project succeed or fall over.
Over the following month, participants will receive one-on-one mentoring and peer support to develop a project pack that acts as a blueprint for the work.
The program concludes with a small industry peer event where artists present their blueprint for feedback, gaining further insight and building new connections.
If you’ve ever thought, “How come no one told me about this earlier?” This is the program for you.

SELECTION CRITERIA
Applications will be assessed on the following:
- Suitability of the project: The proposed project is experimental and suited to multi-arts venues or non-traditional spaces (beyond standard black box theatres or white cube galleries). Projects can be at any stage of development and have had past presentations.
- Clarity of the initial concept: The project concept is clearly articulated while still allowing significant room for development.
- Relevance of the program to the artist’s practice: The applicant identifies a clear gap in knowledge or experience that this program would help address.
- Long-term potential: The applicant demonstrates forward thinking about how the project could extend beyond a single presentation.
Participants are required to bring a project for discussion to the workshop.
TERMS OF ENGAGEMENT
- Selected participants are expected to commit to one full-day workshop, approximately 8 hours across June to develop a project outline, and 2 hours to attend and present at the final industry event.
- Participants must be available for the workshop and industry event dates, as these are essential components of the program.
- This is a pilot program created by an independent producer and presented by The Substation. While artist fees are not available for participation in this round, the program is free to attend.
- Artists can apply with projects that have already been presented.
