The Substation/ Artist/gemma+molly/

Gemma Sattler and Molly McKenzie, collaboratively: gemma+molly, are Naarm-based performers and choreographers. They have been practicing as a duo for the past 5 years, devising choreographic work for theatre and gallery contexts. Their practice is anchored by a shared interest in choreography as a structure that can function with, and independently of, dance. gemma+molly devise performance that choreographs attention, space and bodies, both animate (performer) and inanimate (object) - endeavouring to make work that queers audience and performers’ relations to objects, space and temporality.

Their work has been presented at Dancehouse, FELTspace, KINGS Artist-Run, PICA x STRUT Dance, and Temperance Hall.

Currently, gemma+molly are participating in Dance Nucleus’ (Singapore) Certificate Program for Critical Practice in Contemporary Performance.

The duo’s practice is informed by their individual work as performers for independent artists across National and International theatre, gallery and museum contexts.

Gemma’s performance credits include Plot Hole by Sarah Aiken for Danceless Complex (Hong Kong 2026), Body Corp by Sarah Aiken for Darebin Arts/Speakeasy (Melbourne 2025), Body Loss by Angela Goh for IMMATERIAL VOL.8 (Mexico 2025) and at Buxton Contemporary (Melbourne 2024).

Molly’s credits include Body Loss by Angela Goh for IMMATERIAL VOL.8 (Mexico 2025) and at Buxton Contemporary (Melbourne 2024), Feather Star by Alicia Frankovich at UQ Art Museum (Brisbane 2025) and ACCA (Melbourne 2025).

IN DEVELOPMENT

gemma+molly are currently developing Split View, a new work for the gallery context. It is a work for three dancers and three microphones in two gallery rooms. This workcontinues a series of choreographic work that is anchored by the potential of collectivism over individualism. Split View regards the gallery, dancers and microphones as individual bodies, that can hold, pass and dislodge movement and sound between one another in an attempt to action togethering.
