Eiko Ishibashi I Jim O’Rourke | Chihei Hatakeyama
Japan’s music communities are as diverse as they are rich. Electronic music, and its connection to film composition and the avant-garde, has played a central role in 20th and 21st century music from Japan and this evening celebrates those connections.
Eiko Ishibashi is perhaps best known for her work in film, with her score for Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Drive My Car being widely praised and nominated for numerous awards. Her solo works, which operate at the nexus of electronic and acoustic music, are buoyant zones where melody and texture are equally valued and explored.
Long time Japanese resident Jim O’Rourke delivers his first ever Australian solo performance. His resume spans three decades and ties together highly influential works as a songwriter, producer and composer. For his performance O’Rourke offers a dynamic and spatial concert of his trademark electronic music. Delivered utilising an octophonic speaker set-up, this work is wholly immersive and compelling in its approach.
Chihei Hatakeyama creates some of the most consuming ambient music to be heard today. His albums, which draw together his interest in the guitar as a sound source, environmental sound fields and cavernous spaces, maintain a deep sense of harmony. His music is oceanic in its form, rolling ever onward towards our shore.
