PRESENTED BY THE SUBSTATION AND RISING
Enter a warehouse-sized contraption on the verge of collapse, operated by masked performer Narcissister and her doll-like companions—here to tickle and topple unseen forces.
A trio of dolls climb up from a rabbit hole. By the light of a candelabra, they explore a giant machine made of precariously placed ladders, planks and pylons. Then one burnt rope sends an old punching bag swinging...
Narcissister is a Brooklyn-based artist who drives haunted carnival rides over tropes of titillation. She goes headlong into the muck of fantasy and fetish, augmenting her feminine presence—as an African American/Sephardic Jewish woman—with culturally debased costumes. Then she often lights things up with lo-fi magic and pyrotechnics.
For RISING, she’s here to build (and destroy) Voyage Into Infinity — a giant performance installation that pays homage to the raw punk energy of Bad Brains and the controlled chaos of Rube Goldberg machines, designed to send everyday objects cascading into mischievous states of cause and effect.
Only, in this version, it’s Narcissister who’s pulling the strings.
Watch for the candlelight. A catalyst is crawling into the picture.
Voyage Into Infinity (2024) was commissioned by Pioneer Works, and curated by Gabriel Florenz.
“The pseudonymous New York artist never appears without her distinctive mask, inspired by a wig display from the 1960s, but she is also perennially donning and shedding bespoke costumes that upend familiar conventions of gender, age, race, class and sexuality. Sometimes she even upends gravity."
