PRESENTED BY THE SUBSTATION AND SERENDIPITY ARTS FESTIVAL
Premiering at The Substation earlier this year as a part of Asia TOPA, Oblation by Vijay Thillaimuthu is set for its international premiere in Goa, India, this December.
Informed by the rich history of sound creation, Oblation incorporates creative technologies with traditional melodies and rhythms from South India and Sri Lanka. Featuring singing, lasers, projections, and vibrations, Oblation is an audiovisual experience, created by Tamil-Australian electronic composer Vijay Thillaimuthu.
Oblation creates a restorative and transformative space through visualisation of sonic performance using lasers, projections and cymatics – the patterns that emerge through response of particles/liquids to sound. Underneath a large-scale three dimensional projection surface, an expansive web of electronics form a central tower in service of creation and contemplation.
We are thrilled to be bringing Oblation to Goa for Serendipity Arts Festival this December. During the AsiaTOPA delegates program in March, the team at Serendipity were invited to attend a performance of Oblation, subsequently programming it into this very special 10th edition of the festival. This presentation is led by a team of diaspora artists from the Subcontinent, making it an extremely meaningful opportunity, and we hope that presenting work within its region of origin, will unlock new meaning in its original creative intent.

WORKSHOP: ELECTRIC DREAMS
15 December, 12 – 1 pm
Book and read more here
This workshop will empower participants to creatively explore electronic instruments for idea generation, be that musical or otherwise.
Synthesisers, drum machines and FX units have literally changed the very fabric of society, from the abstract utopian visions of early electronic composers to the 808 driven cultural revolutions of rave culture, early hip-hop (& so, so much more). Hosted by internationally acclaimed audio-visual artist Vijay Thillaimuthu, this workshop will give attendees the opportunity to delve into the history of electronic sound tools and culture before facilitating interaction with some of the most prominent electronic instruments of all time. Recently, Paul Purgas, of legendary avant-techno duo Empty set, uncovered a forgotten archive of tapes from electronic Indian pioneers of the late 60’s & early 70’s. This forever changed the narrative of the history of electronic music. How will your creativity and electric dreams shape the future?
