PRESENTED BY THE SUBSTATION

Join us at The Substation for the Victorian premiere of Mood Ring.

Mood Ring is a documentary observing the interactions that best friends Sereima Adimate and Chiara Garrett-Saladrau experience in Viti Levu, Fiji's largest island.

The film features stories from residents of each place the two visit. Between Bubu Vani (Grandma), Uncle Mana (Uncle), Iman (Friend), and Freddy (Father), we’re shown exchanges that cover resilience, addiction, holy spirits, premonition, lineage, and the ongoing challenges of the diasporic experience.

The film, which premiered to the world recently at Sydney Festival, to much critical acclaim, is seen through Sereima and Chiara’s point of view, with a keen focus on the influence of location, Fijian custom, its unspoken expectations and the grief pervading conversations around displacement.

As the first feature length film directed by a Fijian woman, shot entirely in Fiji, Mood Ring provides unfiltered access to settlements and villages – including the families who live there – in a bid to understand the responsibilities of knowing home.

Featuring poetry from Apimeleki Rainima, Mood Ring answers the unanswered by allowing artists known for their perspectives in Australia the chance to return to familial roots in the daring shadow of taboo.

There will be a special Artist Talk following the film, with two of Mood Ring's stars Sereima Adimate/Stelly G and Apimeleki Rainima.
