PHONG NGO is a contemporary visual artist; his practice is concerned with the interpretation of history, memory and place, and how it impacts individual and collected identity. His collaborative practice with Hwafern Quach, Slippage, examines the cycles of history in conjunction with current geopolitical and economic issues through the lens of vernacular cultures, artifacts and language.
In 2018 he co-curated HYPHENATED at The SUBSTATION, an exhibition of presenting the work of Asian-Australian Artist living and working in Victoria, which has resulted in the development of Hyphenated Projects a platform for presenting Asian Australian Art in Victoria.
His notable exhibitions include, New Histories, Bendigo Art Gallery (2018); Conflicted: Works from the Vietnam Archive Project, The Substation (2017); Article 14.1, Next Wave Festival (2014); Melbourne Now, National Gallery of Victoria (2013); My dad the people smuggler, Counihan Gallery (2013); Domino Theory, Centre for Contemporary Photography (2012).
He has been the recipient of numerous grants; Australian Council for the Arts (2016, 2015, 2013); Creative Victoria Grant (2013, 2015); City of Melbourne (2013); and been a finalist in a number of national art prizes; Incinerator Art Award: Art For Social Change (2017); Banyule Award for Works on Paper (2017, 2015); Substation Contemporary Art Prize (2016, 2014, 2013); Macquarie Digital Portraiture Award (2013); William and Winifred Bowness Photography Prize (2012); National Photographic Portrait Prize (2011).
