PRESENTED BY MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL
In a collaboration that spans continents and cultures, rising star of European jazz, Polish violinist Amalia Umeda, joins the Hand to Earth ensemble for The Crow, a brand-new commission by MIJF and Jazztopad Festival in Poland, which traces the songline of the crow (waak waak) in Arnhem Land.

Comprising of vocalists Daniel Wilfred and Sunny Kim, with didgeridoo player David Wilfred, trumpeter and sound artist Peter Knight, and clarinettist Aviva Endean, Hand to Earth have quickly developed an international reputation as one of Australia’s most distinctive contemporary music ensembles.

The quintet’s ARIA-nominated self-titled debut album was met with international praise and high-profile feature performances including at the iconic Pierre Boulez Saal in Berlin.

Daniel Wilfred sings in language, and is the keeper of Yolngu Manikay (songs) from North East Arnhem Land that can be traced back for over 40,000 years. His is the oldest continuously practised music tradition in the world. Sunny Kim sings in English and Korean, intoning gestures that invoke raw elemental forces.

Eluding genre, traversing continents, and fusing the ancient and the contemporary, this ambitious collaboration is must-see.
