The Substation/ Artist/Sandra Parker/
Sandra Parker is a choreographer and interdisciplinary artist and a resident artist at The Substation. Creating rigorous choreographic works, characterised as continuous in form but prismatic in structure, Parker's carefully distilled corporealities are situated in specific environments that often put the viewer in close proximity with performance, inviting absorption and involvement in the dancer's quest for reformulation and transcendence.
Sandra Parker’s body of work includes durational choreographies; multi-disciplinary theatre pieces; and installation works for gallery spaces. Recent projects include: “Safehold” (2024), ETU Ballroom, Trades Hall, Melbourne, presented by Dancehouse and supported by Creative Australia and the City of Melbourne; “Temporary Hold” (2023), nominated for a 2023 Victorian Green Room Award for Best Choreography and Best Ensemble; “Yield to Resistance” (2022), winning the 2022 Victorian Green Room Award for Best Choreography; and “Replacement” (2021), a durational installation for Sarah Scout Presents, Melbourne, supported by Creative Victoria. Sandra has presented work at Buxton Contemporary, the Ian Potter Museum of Art, the Centre for Contemporary Photography and Sarah Scout Presents, along with major arts centres in Australia and internationally. Sandra has undertaken residencies including the inaugural The Australian Ballet residency; Cite international des arts, Paris; Bogliasco Foundation Italy; Bundanon NSW; Sophiensaele, Germany; and the City of Melbourne, Boyd Studio. Sandra was awarded the Australia Council for the Arts Dance Board Fellowship.
IN DEVELOPMENT
Within the relentless, 24/7 market-driven, technological existence of life under late capitalism, CONSEQUENCE will examine the crippling effects of progress for its own sake by setting out the momentous impact this has on the body and physical existence. Using choreography as a metaphor for the deterioration of our physical and emotional world, CONSEQUENCE will explore actionable strategies to find harmony, perform only what is essential: attempting to slow down, quieten the noise, and do less. Crafted to show the effects of accelerated growth, progress, and social alienation, without giving in to despair, CONSEQUENCE will tackle how to disengage from the inevitable, propose a new movement modality, and move towards the possibility of a sustainable future.
