
The Substation/ Artist/Jo Lloyd/
Jo Lloyd is an influential Melbourne dance artist working with choreography as a social encounter, revealing behaviour over particular durations and circumstances. A graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts, Jo has presented her work in gallery spaces and theatres in Japan, Hong Kong, the Melbourne International Festival, the National Gallery of Australia, Liveworks, Dance Massive, the Museum of Contemporary Art and Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts.
Jo recently created; Archive the Archive for the National Gallery of Australia’s exhibition Know My Name. Her work OVERTURE (Arts House 2018 and Melbourne Festival 2019) received three Green Room Awards and a Helpmann Award nomination. In 2018 Jo created CUTOUT at ACCA, for the Melbourne International Festival, CUTOUT the film was presented as part of Tempo Festival NZ 2020.
Other major works include; DOUBLE DOUBLE with Deanne Butterworth, Tina Havelock Stevens and Evelyn Morris, presented at the Ian Potter Museum of Art, Liveworks and Mona Foma, LIVE JUNK (2018 and 2019), Garden Dance for the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, Confusion for Three (Arts House and PICA) and Mermermer, with Nicola Gunn for Chunky Move - Next Move 2016.
Jo has worked extensively as a performer in the works of Choreographers Shelley Lasica, Sandra Parker and Gideon Obarzanek (with Chunky Move 2003-2008). Jo has collaborated with Shian Law, David Rosetzky, Stephen Bram, Alicia Frankovich, Speak Percussion and Liza Lim, Ranters Theatre and Back to Back Theatre.
Jo teaches regularly for Lucy Geurin Inc., Chunky Move, VCA and has taught extensively in Australia and overseas for Akram Khan Company, Bangarra, Australian Dance Theatre, Tasdance, Dancenorth, Jacobs Pillow and Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts.
Jo received two Asialink Residencies (Japan 2004-5), was the Dancehouse Housemate (2008), was Resident Director of Lucy Guerin Inc. (2016).
