Everywhen by Matthias Schack-Arnott is a major new work exploring large-scale cyclic patterns. Up to 100 suspended percussive objects hover and rotate along a six-meter moving axis. The work investigates a perpetually shifting sonic environment through the intersection of sound, time and space.
Matthias Schack-Arnott is a local based percussive artist from Williamstown working at the intersection between kinetics, new media and sound.
Described by The Guardian as ‘sonically and visually exquisite’, Schack-Arnott’ solo work explores unique approaches to percussive performance, often involving the development of new instrumental set-ups built in collaboration with architects, engineers and technicians.
At the age of 21 Schack-Arnott was invited to be the Artistic Associate of Speak Percussion, Australia’s leading percussive arts organisation. Matthias is a key artist in the creative team and a performer in almost all of Speak’s projects nationally & internationally.
He has won numerous awards, including the 2016 Melbourne Prize for Music ‘Development’ Award, the 2014 Green Room Awards ‘Outstanding Work by an Emerging Artist’ and multiple Australian Art Music Awards for his work with Speak Percussion. As a guest artist Matthias appears with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Malaysia Philharmonic Orchestra, Exo-Tech, ELISION, Australian Art Orchestra, Synergy, Chamber Made Opera and Nick Tsiavos Ensemble.
As an interpreter, collaborator and improvisor Schack-Arnott has worked with a diverse range of musicians including Steve Reich, John Zorn, Claire Chase, Unsuk Chin, Michael Pisaro, Tony Buck, Kimbra, Spiritualized, The Necks, Ingar Zach, Jim Denley, Chris Corsano, Stephen O’Malley, Robin Fox and Oren Ambarchi.
Schack-Arnott will be bringing to The SUBSTATION a World Premiere of an expansive solo percussion work, EVERYWHEN, this October.
