Our online programming continues next week with the Australia Art Orchestra (AAO) in focus. Join us for a two-part presentation of interview with AAO’s Artistic Director Peter Knight, and a double presentation of works ’Heat’ and ‘Diomira.’
With an emphasis on improvisation, The Australian Art Orchestra (AAO) seeks to stretch genres and break down the barriers separating disciplines, forms and cultures. Led by daring composer/trumpeter/sound artist Peter Knight, the AAO explores the interstices between the avant-garde and the traditional, between art and popular music, between electronic and acoustic approaches, and creates music that traverse the continuum between improvised and notated forms.
Over the past few years, the AAO premiered several major new works at The Substation, including Kim Myhr’s Vesper (recently released on Hubro) and an extended version of Peter Knight’s composition, Diomira. The AAO has also recently performed Peter Knight’s works at major festivals and venues including JazzFest Berlin, London Jazz Festival, and National Forum of Music, Wroclaw, Poland. In addition, Peter and the AAO have initiated commissions, collaborations, and performances with a diverse range of major international artists including, Anthony Braxton (USA), Nicole Lizée (Canada), Amir ElSaffar (USA), Daniel Wilfred (Arnhem Land), Hyelim Kim (UK/Korea), Baliphonics (Sri Lanka), Alvin Lucier (USA), Bae Il Dong (Korea), and Kim Myhr (Norway).
