Darren Williams: Founding member
Who do you work for?
Self employed glazier - Bayview Glass.
What do you do there?
Replace glass, supply and installation of all glass products including mirrors, showerscreens, splashbacks, leadlighting, frameless door assemblies and shopfronts.
How did you become involved with the Substation and what do you hope to achieve with the Substation?
I was a founding member of the Hobsons Bay Community Arts Centre Inc. I became involved because I wanted to restore the beautiful Newport Substation, a building that I had admired for many years but was becoming a real eyesore and a target for vandals.
I felt our municipality was lacking in facilities for the arts and that the Substation would be a perfect place for a community arts facility. My dream was to create spaces for all sections of the community, from small children to the elderly, to come together to teach, learn, perform and display the many types of artistic expression in our society.
What have been your most memorable achievements in life?
My most memorable achievement was the birth of my beautiful daughter Alex.
Other memorable achievements include...
finally securing the lease on the Substation, approval of our Community Jobs Program, Community Support Fund and Council Grant applications (a total contribution of more than one million dollars towards our project), successfully managing the Community Jobs Program Stage 1, and finding jobs for many of the participants of our last jobs program. |
